CHIREDZI — Former Chiredzi Rural District Council Ward 19 councillor Lovemore Muchono, 42, has reportedly handed himself over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Chiredzi, in a major development in the case involving the death of four-year-old Steadfast Makondo.
According to information published by Patrick Chitongo, Muchono reportedly surrendered to police at around 2 pm on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, accompanied by his lawyer.
The report indicated that an official comment from the police had not been obtained at the time of publication, with details surrounding the handover still emerging.
BACKGROUND TO THE CASE
Muchono had been sought by police in connection with the alleged rape and murder of Steadfast Makondo, a four-year-old Early Childhood Development (ECD) learner who died in Chiredzi on 27 January 2026.
Previous reports stated that the child had been entrusted to Muchono for transport to and from school at Chiredzi Government Primary School.
According to an earlier statement attributed to Masvingo Deputy Provincial Police Spokesperson Masauso Patinyu, the child was allegedly killed and her body left in a bush, while her disappearance was initially reported to her family and authorities.
The case sparked concern within the community, with police previously appealing for information that could assist in locating Muchono.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
The reported surrender marks a significant development in the case. However, confirmation from the police and further details regarding his legal status and any court proceedings are still awaited.
Muchono remains a suspect in the allegations, and the case must proceed through the appropriate legal channels.
The Frontline will continue to follow developments as more verified information becomes available.
